Thursday Doors – Inveresk Lodge Garden

Last week we travelled east, beyond Edinburgh to explore a bit more of that side of the country. The plan, as always, was to see as much as possible National Trust for Scotland properties. This is the lawn at the Inveresk Lodge Garden, with a lovely view of the lodge itself. Now, finding information about this place was less straight forward than I would expect. The whole village of Inveresk is a conservation area and I’ll be sharing more interesting buildings in the following weeks.

The lodge dates back to the 17th Century. It’s empty now and closed to the public. I couldn’t help myself and had a look through the windows: lovely tiled fireplaces and wood panelled walls on one of the rooms. I wish there was a chance to allow visits inside, it looks amazing.

  1. There’s a lot to be said for peering illicitly through the keyhole. Great building and your travels around Scotland sound interesting. Would love to carry your bags.

      1. I have ancestors who were whisky distillers in Islay and I’ve been really looking forward to getting there. Such a fascinating place. Hoping to get there next year. I have another ancestor who lived in the same village as Robbie Burns and can’t help wondering whether he was keeping a close eye out for his sisters.
