Our first experience of a Buddist temple in Japan was, I think, the perfect one, the Higashi Hongaji Temple. Freshly out of the experience of modern Japanese life in Osaka, the short trip to Kyoto showed us so vividly the contrast between the old and the new. This immense structure, the biggest wooden one in Kyoto, was so peaceful and ultimately beautiful, that it was one of the few places we visited again a couple years later.
